Satellite feature on the Apple iPhone 14 expands to 4 new countries in Dec
Days after announcing a $450 million investment to provide critical infrastructure for its satellite feature, Apple shared that Emergency SOS via satellite on the iPhone 14 will be coming to four new countries next month.
While Emergency SOS via satellite is available for iPhone 14 users in the U.S and Canada from today, the satellite feature will be rolling out to France, Germany, Ireland and the U.K in December.
MacPrime reported in September that Apple planned to roll out the satellite feature to more countries this year with more planned for 2023. Apple revealed in a statement to Reuters that the iPhone 14 comes with "custom radio frequency components, and new software designed entirely by Apple, that together enable Emergency SOS via satellite on new iPhone 14 models."
Emergency SOS via satellite enables iPhone 14 users to call emergency services even if they are out of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. A short questionaire appears to help the user answer vital questions so that dispatchers understand the situation and location.
