Almost half a year after unveiling its integrated gigabit LTE modem with the Exynos 8895 chipset, Samsung today announced an even faster LTE modem.

Samsung's latest Cat.18 6 carrier aggregration(CA)-supported LTE modem is able to deliver up to 20% improvement in maximum download speeds compared to the Cat.16 counterpart in the Exynos 8895. This means that you can expect download speeds of up to a whopping 1.2Gbps! With this LTE modem, you can easily download a full-length HD movie in 10 seconds, enjoy buffer-less video calls and mobile live-broadcasting.

The South Korean company states that its latest LTE modem is equipped with 4×4 MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) and 256 QAM (Quadrature amplitude modulation) to maximize the data transfer rate. The 6CA also ensures faster and more stable data transfers

“With the increase of high-quality online content services, the demand for high-performance LTE modems continue to rise as well,” said Woonhaing Hur, Vice President of System LSI Protocol Development at Samsung Electronics. “The 1.2Gbps maximum downlink speed with 6CA support highlights Samsung’s leading design capabilities and well-positions Samsung for the upcoming 5G era.”

The new Cat18. 6CA-supported LTE modem will enter mass production by the end of the year, which means that it is likely to appear in next year's flagship Galaxy S9 and Note 9 devices.
