Samsung wants to be a 5G chipset supplier for Chinese phone makers

Samsung is turning to its 5G chipsets as a potential revenue driver according to a report by DigiTimes.

Industry sources told DigiTimes that Samsung has supplied 5G chipsets to Oppo and Vivo for testing purposes. Having anticipated that Qualcomm and MediaTek might not be able to meet their 5G demands next year, the two Chinese phone makers have received the sample units from Samsung.

Huawei is not mentioned in the list of potential suppliers, which hints that the Chinese phone makers are not comfortable using its 5G solutions out of fear that their phones might not be sold in Western markets.

It is likely that Samsung is trying to sell its latest 5G communication solutions which include the Exynos Modem 5100, the Exynos RF 5500 (a new single-chip radio frequency transceiver) and the supply modulator solution, Exynos SM5800.
