Is Samsung using two different image sensors in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge?

Samsung is not only using two different processors for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, it appears that the image sensors are also different from model to model.

Several forum threads have popped up in XDA Developers where users shared screenshots detailing the specs of the cameras on the Galaxy S7 models. Most Galaxy S7 edge models are shown to be equipped with "SLSI_S5K2L1_FIMC_IS" for the rear camera, which refers to ISOCELL while one Galaxy S7 edge is found to be equipped with "SONY_IMX260_FIMC_IS", which refers to a Sony-made sensor. To make the situation even more confusing, Samsung earlier announced its latest 12-megapixel image sensor with Dual Pixel and ISOCELL technology although it did not mention whether this is being used on the Galaxy S7 models.

According to Android Authority, most Galaxy S7 models - which are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processors - sold in the U.S tend to use the Sony sensor while the Exynos counterparts sold in Britain have Sony sensors. If you recall, a similar issue happened with last year's Galaxy S6 models where consumers assessed that the two different image sensors take photos of different quality.

For consumers in Singapore, it is likely that the Galaxy S7 models will have the Sony sensors as the phones are running on Exynos 8890 processors. To find out which sensor is on your Galaxy S7 this Friday, install the app AIDA64 and tap on Devices.

We've reached out to Samsung Mobile Singapore for verification on this matter and will update this section when we have the information.
