Laptop displays are about the get a huge upgrade. At CES 2019, several manufacturers announced that they would soon be offering 4K OLED displays, including brands like Dell, HP, and Razer. Now, it seems like we know who will be making those panels. Samsung has announced what it says is the first 15.6-inch 4K OLED display for laptops, confirming also that it would be supplying this panel to leading manufacturers for their premium notebooks.

The 4K OLED display is expected to enter mass production by the middle of February, so it could be a couple of months before laptops with the new screen arrive.

According to Samsung, the OLED panel will have a brightness range of between 0.0005 to 600 nits (good enough for the DisplayHDR 600 certification) and a dynamic contrast ratio of 120,000:1. In addition, it has blacks that appear 200 times darker and whites twice as bright as those on regular LCD screens.

It can also display up to 34 million colors or 100 per cent of the DCI-P3 color space. There are other benefits as well, and Samsung says the panel is thinner, lighter, and more power efficient than a regular LCD,

Still, OLED displays aren't perfect, and common issues include things like screen burn-in. Either way, we should see the new panel appear on notebooks in the coming months.
