Samsung’s new M8 smart monitor gets set to make its way here

Following on from last year, Samsung’s smart monitors are making a reappearance as Samsung announces a refresh to its line-up for 2022. This year’s line-up features three models, the M5, M7, and M8, along with new smart features.

As Jacus Long, Director & Head, Display and Brand Memory Business, Samsung Electronics Singapore said:

The refreshed line-up not only includes features that our consumers have come to love, such as the Smart TV Experience, Remote Work capabilities, but also enhanced capabilities that make the Smart Monitor even smarter, even without a connection to a PC.

Looking at the Big Brother of the series

With Samsung granting a preview during CES 2022, the Samsung Smart Monitor M8 is a 32-inch UHD display that is slimmer than its predecessor at only 11.4mm thick. It also has two built-in 5W speakers and a tweeter to deliver 2.2-channel audio. It features a 16:9 aspect ratio, a 60Hz refresh rate, and 400 nits of brightness. Plus, you also get HDR 10+, 4ms response time, 3,000:1 contrast ratio, and 99% sRGB Coverage.

For connectivity, it comes with one micro-HDMI port and two USB-C ports, along with Wi-Fi 5, AirPlay 2, and Bluetooth 4.2 support. Based on Tizen, there is also voice controls for Bixby and Alexa. In fact Bixby is always on for users of the M7 and M8 Smart Monitors. Thanks to the in- built Far Field Voice microphone, Bixby is always listening.

Time for work?

The M8 comes with a magnetic, detachable SlimFit Cam that connects to the top bezel. It has face tracking and auto-zoom functions, so it can keep you in shot much like Apple’s CenterStage. There is also a video call application that supports most calling apps like Google Duo, Teams, and others.

Time to play?

The Samsung Smart Monitor M8 comes with Smart Hub that enables Smart TV functions so users can stream their favourite programmes via popular streaming apps including, Apple TV, Disney+, Netflix, Viu, and YouTube straight from the monitor.

Given the refresh rate and response time, this isn’t really a gaming monitor. That’s probably the reason why Samsung hasn’t included a gaming hub with the M8. Much like how the Smart Hub brings all of the various streaming services together, the gaming hub was meant to be a single view of a user’s favourite games and cloud gaming services.

All of the three Smart Monitors can be a SmartThings Hub so users can have a single view of all devices onscreen, and create different settings based on their personal habits and preferences. Want to dim the lights at night, or have them come on to wake you in the morning? It can be set using the monitor. Voice control is also available on the new Smart Monitor M8 and M7 series,

Technically, with the various smart hubs, you don’t really need a PC to use the Smart Monitor M8. Simply connect a keyboard and mouse and access your favourite Cloud-based functions and get started.
