We were hosted by Samsung corporate communication team in Seoul, South Korea this week. We had an opportune briefing by SVP Junehee Lee, Head of Technology, Mobile Communications Business, who shared valuable insights about Samsung’s leadership role and vision for 5G technology.

Samsung rightfully assumes a leadership role in the race for 5G technology to replace 4G connectivity. In 2013, Samsung, who is a strong believer in mmWave mobile broadband systems, demonstrated its adaptive array transceiver technology as proof of concept for mmWave data transmission at a speed of up to slightly over 1Gbps, up to 2km.

With the technology’s inherent high-bandwidth and low-latency advantages, Samsung aims to cover all aspects of 5G standards that include ensuring ultra-fast mobile broadband experience from portable devices that fit in pockets to wearables, establish reliable communication links with low-latency responsiveness, and support for massive machine type communications (mMTC). This will allow 5G technology to scale up from serving individual users, to vehicular fleets, and even entire smart cities.

To consolidate its leadership position, Samsung started its push for approval of 5G NR specifications in 2013. By 2018, the company releases its first 5G NR-compliant Exynos Modem 5100, which was billed as the world’s first 5G modem that met 3GPP standard specifications for 5G NR. Samsung also works closely with carriers, service partners and chipset vendors to create a robust partner ecosystem that’s compliant with 3GPP and international 5G standards.

The company takes security very seriously with a from-ground-up approach. Samsung’s Knox security framework is applied to devices that include its modern smartphones and Smart TVs. It extends to 5G devices and IoT endpoints, now and in the future. In addition to use of its internationally accredited Knox security framework, Samsung’s in-house manufacturing capabilities also allow for a secure supply chain, with reduced risk of espionage or extraneous supply chain disruptions.

 

Benefits of 5G

The immediate benefits of 5G are its ultra-high speeds of up to 20Gbps, which are about 20 times faster than 4G LTE. Its low latency allows for responsive communication while its mMTC support will allow connectivity for over 1 million 5G devices, within an area of up to 1km2. Technologies such as augmented and virtual reality solutions can be implemented at large scale. Self-driving vehicles can also benefit from such implementations.

 

The Samsung 5G Vision

To date, Samsung has sold over 2 million 5G smartphones, and the company aims to democratize 5G by offering 5G smartphones across a broad product range, which currently spans the Samsung Galaxy A90 to the premium Samsung Galaxy S10 5G.

Samsung estimates that there are approximately 7 billion connected IoT devices. This figure is expected to increase to over 30 billion IoT endpoints by 2020 due to the widespread adoption of 5G. Samsung is confident of being a 5G leader, from its secured end-to-end supply chain for 5G infrastructure and equipment to its role in establishing 5G international standards.
