Samsung’s 2-year-old Galaxy S9 is starting to get the One UI 2.1 update

Shortly after starting its One UI 2.1 rollout for the Galaxy Note 9, Samsung is now beginning to update the Galaxy S9, an even older flagship that the company released in early 2018.

According to SamMobile, this update is now arriving on S9 handsets in Korea and Germany, carrying firmware numbers ending with ‘ETF4’ and ‘ETF5’ respectively. Based on Samsung’s track record, S9 phones sold here would probably get the update (which also includes the June 2020 security patch) sometime next month.

Like the Note 9’s case, S9 users will see several new features that made their debut on the Galaxy S20 series and Galaxy Z Flip series.

The biggest one is Single Take, a photo mode that records a 10-sec clip after you hit the shutter button and then processes the recording to give you a variety of best shots. Another is My Filters, which basically lets you create your own filters. Pro video recording mode is back as well. Other smaller features include an AR Zone app for AR Emoji and AR Doodle, Quick Share and Music Share for easy sharing of files and Bluetooth speaker connections with other devices, and improvements to the Samsung Keyboard and Gallery app.

If you’re still holding on to an S9, know that this is probably the last big update for the series. Samsung typically only gives two major OS updates for its phones and the S9 already got its second (Android 10) this Feb. From here on out, it’s going to be security updates every two to three months.
