Samsung reportedly secured 5nm modem chip contract from Qualcomm

Samsung is said to have scored a victory against rival TSMC and secured a 5nm modem chip contract from Qualcomm.

According to Reuters, two sources claim that Samsung has won a contract to make new Qualcomm 5G chips using its 5-nanometer process. The sources added that Samsung will manufacture some of Qualcomm's X60 modem chips.

While one of the sources said TSMC is also likely to manufacture some 5nm modems for Qualcomm, the contract is a huge win for Samsung as it tries to regain market share in the non-memory chips sector. Moreover, the X60 modem chip is expected to be used in many mobile devices as telcos around the world move towards 5G.
