Samsung remains top phone maker, but shipments fell 13%
When the global smartphone market shrinks, the leader of the pack tends to shrink as well. Based on the latest data by Counterpoint Research, Samsung experienced a 13% YoY decline while the global smartphone market fell by 5% compared to a year ago.
Samsung managed to ship 72.2 million units from July to September 2018. While this is marginally better than the previous quarter of 71.6 million units, it is a steep drop from 83.3 millions a year ago.
The global smartphone market might have seen shipments declined by 5%, but Huawei managed to buck the trend and grow its shipments 33% YoY. Huawei's shipment of 53.2 million units in Q3 2018 places the Chinese company in 2nd position ahead of Apple whose iPhone shipments remained flat. Rounding up the top five are Oppo and Xiaomi with 9% market share each.
