Samsung introduces ECG and digital rotating bezel on the Galaxy Watch Active 2
Almost six months after announcing the Galaxy Watch Active, Samsung today unveiled its successor, the Galaxy Watch Active 2.
Available in two sizes (40mm and 44mm), the Galaxy Watch Active 2 comes with a digital rotating bezel which you can turn both clockwise and counter-clockwise to navigate. The black bezel that surrounds the Super AMOLED display is actually a touch-sensitive strip that you can run your finger over and it gives a click-like haptic buzz to simulate the clicks of the physical rotating bezel.
The Galaxy Watch Active 2 can manually track more than 40 workouts with 7 of them automatically activated (running, walking, cycling, swimming, rowing machine, elliptical machine and dynamic workouts). It also has an updated Running Coach feature to monitor your running pace in real-time and offers 7 different training programs. While it comes with ECG capability, the feature will not be available at launch.
Other features of the Galaxy Watch Active 2 include customising their watch face to their outfit with the My Style colour extraction algorithm on the Galaxy Wearable app. Simply take a photo of the outfit, choose from five different colour patterns, and the watch face changes in seconds to match their outfit of the day. Like their previous smartwatches, you'll also get Samsung Health, SmartThings integration for smart home control and Samsung Pay.
Don't forget you also have Bixby voice assistant baked in to help navigate the smartwatch, check on the weather status or even start a workout - all without fiddling with the watch directly. For those who of us who love to travel, the Galaxy Watch Active2 now supports convenient real-time voice and text translation in 20 languages through an app available on the Galaxy Store.
Under the screen, Samsung's Exynos 9110 dual-core 1.15GHz chipset runs the Watch Active 2 and is augmented by 768MB RAM (Bluetooth model) / 1.5GB RAM (LTE model), and is supported by 4GB of internal storage. These specs apply for both watch sizes:-
|Display||1.4-inch (320 x 320 pixels) Always On Display||1.2-inch (320 x 320 pixels) Always On Display|
|Glass||Corning Gorilla Glass DX+||Corning Gorilla Glass DX+|
Other specs include an aluminium case for the Bluetooth-only model, stainless steel for the LTE model, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and 5ATM water resistance rating - which means the watch is water-resistant to up to 50 meters in depth for 10 minutes.
Powered by Tizen OS, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 is compatible with Android devices running 5.0 or higher with at least 1.5GB RAM, and iPhone 5 or above with iOS 9 or later versions.
Available from 27th September, the new Galaxy Watch Active 2 goes for S$398 for the 40mm model and S$448 for the 44mm version. Colour options are Cloud Silver and Pink Gold with fluoroelastomer straps (basically elastic synthetic rubber, just like Apple Watch Sport straps).
