Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ summarized in one minute
In a nutshell, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones. Their key features include an almost bezel-less Infinity Display, a smart assistant named Bixby, and an improved front camera. You can read about their Infinity Display and Bixby software here.
Despite the perceived vastness of the Infinity Display panel with 83% screen-to-body ratio, the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 (at 148.9 x 68.1 x 8.0mm) is actually physically smaller than the 5.5-inch S7 Edge (at 150.9 x 72.6 x 7.7mm). The massive 6.2-inch Galaxy S8+ (159.5 x 73.4 x 8.1 mm) is only slightly larger than the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus (158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3mm). To accommodate such a huge front panel, Samsung removed the physical Home button, while providing a haptic, on-screen Home button instead. The fingerprint sensor now resides on the rear of the device.
The S8 and S8+ also debut a new phone-locking option - facial recognition. This security/privacy alternative is provided along with existing fingerprint unlock and iris unlock methods (just like the short lived Note7).
The two phones are rather identical in hardware. While the specifications sheet below does not specify the processors by name, Singapore will (most likely) be receiving the Exynos 9 Series 8895 octa-core chipset, which also shares the 10nm manufacturing process used for Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform.
Samsung also prides itself for having the first pair of smartphones to come with the Mobile HDR Premium certification, which means that these devices are compatible with HDR content found on Amazon Prime and Netflix. This also means that the Galaxy S8 and S8+ are officially one of the first few phones to support HDR, alongside the Sony Xperia XZ Premium with 4K HDR display, and the LG G6 with support for the HDR10 standard.
