Samsung Galaxy Note III to Showcase 6.3-inch Screen, Rumored for 2013 Launch?

Think handphones with 6.3-inch screens are ludicrous? Think again. Hot on the heels of Huawei's announcement of a 6.1-inch Galaxy Note II competitor, The Korea Times has now reported that Samsung is planning to launch a Samsung Galaxy Note III with a 6.3-inch OLED display in 2013. Given the recent moves made by various manufacturers (HTC, Sony Mobile, Huawei) into the 5.0-inch phablet category, this news doesn't entirely come as a big surprise. To add on, the Korean company will allegedly release a Galaxy S IV with an upsized screen size of 5-inches Super AMOLED display with 1080p resolution and 441ppi pixel density, which will make the devices with 6.0-inch and above screens the new "phablet size" and a step closer to the tablet's 7-inch form factor.

BGR, an online tech portal, seemed to have taken the news with a pinch of cautious optimism:

BGR - "But where there are upsides to a larger display, there are also downsides. To power a 6.3-inch display, Samsung would have to include a significantly larger battery, especially since it would also support LTE. An even larger Galaxy Note would also mean holding the device with one hand will be more difficult for most people. With tradeoffs like those, it seems unlikely a 6.3-inch display will appear on the Galaxy Note III unless Samsung can manage an edgeless layout that keeps the phone’s overall footprint roughly the same."

However, The Verge has quoted a "trusted source" on this, and he/she left them with a rather cryptic quote - "At some point in the next year, and it could be very late in the year, we might fill in the largest gap in our screen size lineup." Coincidentally, this corresponds with the fact that Samsung currently does not have any devices "between 6 and 7 inches" in both its phone and tablet categories. In any case, we wouldn't expect to see it very soon, not at the upcoming CES or MWC in February this year. Given that the Note II was only unveiled in Q3 this year, we still have a couple of months down the road before finalized specs materialize.
