Samsung expected to start mass production of 3nm chips next week
Samsung is expected to make an announcement on 3nm chip production next week.
Sources told Yonhap News Agency that Samsung is likely to beat TSMC to mass produce 3nm chips. The 3nm chips are believed to be built on the Gate-All-Around (GAA) technology which delivers up to 45% area reduction, 30% higher performance and 50% lower power consumption than existing FinFET process. Its 2nm process node is in the early stages of development and mass production is slated for 2025.
The Covid-19 outbreak in 2020 reportedly forced the South Korean company to postpone the 3nm chip production. TSMC is expected to move its 3nm chip process technology to mass production in the second half of the year.
