Samsung Display gearing up for more OLED orders from Apple in 2022

The Apple 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2021) is the first iPad to sport a mini-LED display.

Samsung Display is gearing up its OLED production plants for more orders from Apple in 2022.

According to TheElec, Samsung Display has started the development of a new production process for OLED displays to be used on tablets, notebooks and monitors. A source told TheElec that these OLED panels could be used for future iPad and MacBook models.

It remains to be seen whether Apple plans to use OLED, mini-LED or a combination of both panels across its products. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported last year that 30 to 40% of iPads and 20 to 30% of MacBooks in future will be using mini-LED displays. Kuo even claimed that there are plans for a new MacBook Air with mini-LED in mid-2022.

TheElec reported last month that Apple will launch three OLED iPads over the next two years. The first OLED iPad may arrive in 2022 with the other two OLED models coming in 2023. So far, Apple only uses OLED panels for the iPhone 12 lineup, Apple Watch and Touch Bar on MacBook Pros.
