Samsung cuts production and staff at its last smartphone plant in China

The Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10+.

Six months after closing its only other handset plant in China, Samsung is now planning to cut production and staff at its remaining plant.

A Samsung spokesperson in China told Reuters that there would be “some adjustment to production volume and staff” based on the market situation. In a separate report by financial magazine Caixin, Samsung reportedly offered compensation for employees who leave voluntarily. Caixin claimed that the employees have to sign up by 14 June according to an internal document.

Samsung appears to be hit badly by rising costs and increasing competition in China. Its share of China’s market shrank from about 20% in 2013 based on data provided by Strategy Analytics.
