Samsung clinches deal with Qualcomm to make 5G mobile chipsets
Samsung has reportedly secured a deal with Qualcomm to make 5G mobile chipsets.
The Korea Economic Daily reports that Samsung will be using the 8nm process to make Qualcomm's Snapdragon 750 as the technology enables the manufacturing of the mobile platform at a lower cost compared to 7nm or finer processing technologies.
The latest deal comes less than a month after Samsung clinched a massive foundry deal worth US$844 million to make Snapdragon 875. Samsung also entered an agreement with NVIDIA early last month to manufacture the RTX 30 series graphics cards.
These high-profile deals reveal Samsung's growing technological strengths. While it is a latecomer in the foundry industry and TSMC maintains extensive relationships with many customers, Samsung is believed to be working very hard to narrow the gap. The South Korean company is said to be spending US$8.6 billion every year to develop its chip foundry technology and purchase equipment.
