Samsung Apps to Award Users with Free Downloads

SAMSUNG APPS ROLLS OUT GLOBAL COUPON EVENT TIMED WITH WAVE LAUNCH

Samsung Apps, the mobile phone application hub for Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., announced today it will give away coupons good toward application downloads for all newly registered Samsung smart phone users and Samsung Apps members. The global coupon event begins today in Germany, Turkey, Poland, Singapore and Hong Kong in time for the Wave smart phone launch, with the United Kingdom and other countries to follow shortly after.

Samsung’s goal is to reward its customer base and create greater awareness for Samsung Apps, which launched in September 2009 and has more than tripled in size in many major markets throughout Europe. For users who register for Samsung Apps using their mobile smart phone device or KIES — Samsung Apps’ PC software — the company will give away a coupon good for €10 in select European markets and £9 in the United Kingdom.

“We are having tremendous success in terms of growth with Samsung Apps, so we wanted to reward our new members with another free way to download applications,” said Kanghyun Kwon, vice president, Media Solutions Center, Samsung Electronics. “At the same time, this will help drive new membership, achieve greater awareness during the highly anticipated Wave launch in 14 select countries, and continue Samsung Apps’ remarkable development.”

Samsung Apps’ coupon event is timed with the global release of the Wave handset, Samsung’s latest touch-screen smart phone that is the company’s first to run on its bada open smartphone platform. The device is being rolled out to European markets throughout second quarter 2010.

New users of the Wave or any other Samsung smart phone, including the Omnia, Omnia HD (I8910HD), Omnia II and OmniaLITE, who sign up for Samsung Apps on their mobile device or KIES will receive a coupon redeemable on the device or software toward the download of any application. Should the amount of the purchase exceed the coupon’s value, the customer can pay the difference using a credit card. The event will last for two months after the starting date for all new members in each of the participating 14 countries, including:

  • Germany
  • Netherlands
  • Turkey
  • Sweden
  • Poland
  • Singapore
  • Russia
  • United Kingdom
  • Brazil
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Hong Kong
  • Argentina
  • Mexico

Samsung Apps currently offers a multitude of new programs, including games, social networking, e-books and health-related tools. Users of the Samsung Omnia, Omnia HD (I8910HD), Omnia II, OmniaLITE and now the Wave mobile devices have the ability to download apps in the store, which is designed to automatically display the relevant application catalog available for a user’s specific phone model. Participating application providers include The Associated Press, Electronic Arts, Facebook, Gameloft, Layar, MySpace, Namco Bandai, Twitter, Universal Pictures International, WeatherBug, among many others. Well-known apps include Need for Speed Shift (EA) and WeatherBug (WeatherBug).

The store is currently offered in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Spain, Sweden, Poland, Singapore, Hong Kong and Russia, with more than 80 countries around the world to follow with the Wave launch.
