Safari 12 now available for macOS Sierra and High Sierra

Apple has just released the latest version of its web browser, Safari 12, for macOS Sierra and High Sierra.

Safari 12 was announced at WWDC 2018 as part of macOS Mojave and features numerous security and quality of life improvements.

One of its key security features is that it blocks social media buttons and embedded content from tracking you without permission.

Additionally, Safari 12 will only present simplified system information to sites, thereby preventing them from fingerprinting individual Macs based on system configurations.

Lastly, Safari 12 will have built-in password manager features and will be able to generate, autofill, and store passwords.

Here is the release note for Safari 12 from Apple:

  • Adds the ability to view website icons in tabs
  • Automatically suggests and fills a strong, unique password when creating an account or changing a password
  • Flags reused passwords in Safari Preferences
  • Adds support for allowing or blocking pop-ups on specific websites
  • Prevents embedded content and social media buttons from tracking cross-site browsing without permission.
  • Suppresses ad retargeting by reducing advertisers' ability to identify Mac devices uniquely
  • Automatically turns off Safari extensions that negatively impact browsing performance
  • Improves security by only supporting legacy Safari Extensions that have been reviewed by Apple
  • Improves security by discontinuing support for most NPAPI plug-ins

macOS Sierra and High Sierra users can download Safari 12 by going to the Mac App Store and going to the 'Updates' tab.

Alternatively, users can also wait until next week for macOS Mojave to drop. Safari 12 will come pre-installed with macOS Mojave.
