Upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Air might have a mini-LED display

The upcoming 12.9-inch Apple iPad Air might come with a mini-LED display. The current 10.9-inch iPad Air has a LCD display.

It appears that Apple's iPads are going to be getting significant display upgrades. Apple is expected to switch to OLED for the upcoming iPad Pro models. And as for the rumoured 12.9-inch iPad Air, that could be getting a mini-LED display to differentiate it from the smaller 10.9-inch model.

This rumour comes from Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), who believes that the 12.9-inch iPad Air will feature a mini-LED display that is similar to the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

Mini-LED display has been an exclusive feature for the larger iPad Pro model and Ross believes the switch to mini-LED for the 12.9-inch iPad Air would help Apple to use up the remaining supplies of the panel.

Compared to the LCD panels of the existing and previous iPad Air models, the mini-LED panel offers more vivid colours, increased contrast ratio, and greater dynamic range. But it's not without faults and blooming can be an issue under specific conditions.

According to the latest rumours, Apple will likely announce the new OLED iPad Pro and iPad Air models in the week of 6 May. We reckon the 12.9-inch iPad Air with mini-LED display could be an instant hit with consumers if Apple manages to price it right.
