As rumored, iTunes will be replaced with standalone Music, TV, and Podcasts apps

As it turns out, the rumors were right. Apple has (finally) decided to retire iTunes.

iTunes was born some 18 years ago in 2001 as a media player/library app. But over the years, it was asked to do more and more.

When the iPod was introduced shortly after, iTunes was the app you used to manage and sync music on the iPod. The same happened in 2007 when the iPhone was introduced. Again, iTunes was tasked with the job of updating, syncing, and managing the iPhone.

Consequently, over the years, it became bloated, clumsy, and less intuitive to use than other Apple apps. There have been numerous calls in the past for Apple to redesign it and break it apart and now it is finally happening.

As rumored, iTunes will be succeeded by three separate standalone apps: Music, TV, and Podcasts.

This move makes a lot of sense as it would bring the macOS more in line with iOS. Additionally, these standalone apps will highlight and leverage Apple’s new and existing services such as Apple Music and the upcoming Apple TV Plus.

This plays in with Apple's strategy of turning to its services division to make up for dwindling hardware sales.

If you do use iTunes for syncing your iOS devices, Apple says that will now be handled by Finder.
