Rumor: Future Sony sensor could get rid of corner issues with older lenses

How adding a micro-lens over the image sensor will help redirect the light.

A Sony patent has been floated online involving a sensor that features multiple layers instead of the classic RGB Bayer pattern, and has a lens on the sensor to correct the angle of light hitting the sensor. This method redirects the light so it hits the full sensor at a right-angle, thus allowing future lenses to be more compact.

This is an issue with the current E-mount as the shorter flange distance means that lenses have to be larger to correct the incident angle at the corner which usually causes color shifting, vignetting and loss of sharpness overall. It seems that this proposed solution would also allow all third-party lenses to work perfectly with the Sony FE cameras, which will certainly be a boon to Sony users.

The multi-layer design is also fairly reminiscent of what Panasonic and Fujifilm have been rumored to be developing, so perhaps this is another sign that camera makers are very much looking into ways to reinvent camera sensors as we know it.

Hopefully this technology sees production soon!
