Rumor: The AMD Radeon RX 500 series graphics cards will be launched in April

The AMD Radeon RX 480 reference card.

According to German site Heise.de, AMD has plans to launch its Radeon RX 500 range of graphics cards. Where do the upcoming RX 500 cards sit in the grand scheme of things, especially with the impending launch of Radeon RX Vega GPUs? For a start, the Radeon RX Vega GPUs aren’t slated for an April launch, and the rumored Radeon RX 500 graphics cards are actually rebranded Polaris-based Radeon RX 400 cards that have slightly improved specifications.

On 04 April, the Radeon RX 580 and Radeon RX 570 will be launched. A week later, on 11 April, the RX 560 and RX 550 will be unveiled. The specifications of the rebranded cards aren’t exactly mind-blowing; here’s a quick look at their improved specifications.

AMD Radeon RX 500 series GPUs Compared

Model AMD Radeon RX 580 AMD Radeon RX 480 AMD Radeon RX 570 AMD Radeon RX 470
Stream Processors 2304 2304 2048 (?) 2048
TMUs / ROPs 144 / 32 144 / 32 128 (?) / 32 128 / 32
Onboard Memory 8GB GDDR5  8GB GDDR5 8GB GDDR5 4GB GDDR5 (up to 8GB GDDR5)
Memory Clock Speed 8000MHz 8000MHz 7000MHz 6600MHZ
GPU Boost Clock Speed ~1340MHz 1266MHz ~1244MHz 1206MHz
DDR Memory Bus 256-bit 256-bit  256-bit 256-bit
Memory Bandwidth 256GB/s  256GB/s 256GB/s 211GB/s

To reiterated, the first two AMD RX 500 cards have slightly improved specifications, and in particular, the AMD Radeon RX 570 sports video RAM that is rated to operate at 7000MHz, slightly higher than its older counterpart, the Radeon RX 470, which features video memory rated to operate at 6600MHz. Speaking of onboard VRAM, both Radeon RX 580 and RX 570 cards will each have two variants, 4GB and 8GB versions.

There's scant details on the other two, lower-end RX 500 series cards. Suffice to say, the Radeon RX 560 is expected to be a rebranded Radeon RX 460. As for the Radeon RX 550, its details are still kept away from prying eyes.
