It looks like the leaks we covered were right on the money.

The next Resident Evil game has been announced for PlayStation 5, and it’s called Resident Evil: Village. As in, Resident Evil VIII(age). As in, Resident Evil 8. You hear those distant explosions? That’s the sound of Capcom blowing everyone’s minds.

Watch the first trailer for the game:

Revealed at PlayStation’s ‘Future of Gaming’ show, the game is set for a 2021 release. It functions as a straight sequel to Resident Evil 7, which featured a new first-person perspective and playable character Ethan Winters. Resident Evil 8 once again puts you in the shoes of poor Ethan, who finds himself in a snowy mountainous area filled with all manner of spooky things.

Aesthetically, it resembles Resident Evil 4 a ton - set in a strange village, featuring giant castles and supernatural monsters. This time, there are werewolves! Capcom further elaborated on the game’s story in a PlayStation blog post

Taking place a few years after the events of Resident Evil 7 biohazard, in which protagonist Ethan Winters traveled to Louisiana to search for his missing wife, Mia, Resident Evil Village sees the reunited Mia and Ethan living happily together and putting their shared nightmares of the Baker’s plantation house behind them. Finally able to move on from those horrifying events, Ethan’s world suddenly comes crashing down once again when Chris Redfield, an unexpected yet familiar face makes an appearance, setting off a chain of events that sees a distraught Ethan seeking answers to Chris’s shocking actions… and ultimately finding him in a mysterious village.

You got that right - Chris Redfield is once again front and centre in the franchise, but this time he seems to have broken bad. The iconic character is seen brutally killing Ethan’s wife Mia in the trailer, after muttering a half-hearted apology for doing so. What happened to our favourite boulder-punching hero?

Resident Evil 8 will bring the scares on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2021.
