Report: GPU shipments have improved from last quarter; the PC market may be stabilizing

According to the latest Jon Peddie Research report, GPU shipments have increased 2.4% from last quarter. This meant for the year 2015, its final quarter actually saw a 2.4% increment in total GPU shipments; however, the overall year-to-year total GPU shipments decreased by 14%; desktop graphics declined by 9% while notebook GPU shipments decreased by 17%.

However, Jon Peddie Research have noted, with optimism, the last quarter is “...typically flat to up in the seasonality cycles of the past.” And with the recent last quarter’s 2.4% increment, which is above the ten-year average of negative growth (-3.4%, to be exact), points to a “rebounding” GPU market. The research firm extrapolates this finding to conclude the PC market is “...stabilizing.” Also on a bright note, AMD’s overall GPU shipment numbers have increased to 5.16%, quarter-on-quarter. In comparison, Intel’s shipment figures increased by 0.73%, while NVIDIA leads the way with an increment of 8.41%.

The report also observed that despite the dearth of new GPUs from both AMD and NVIDIA in the second half of 2015, their products continued to drive GPU sales. This was a combination of timely price reductions as well as the release of GPU-intensive game titles that include Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Star Wars Battlefront and Call of Duty: Black Ops III. As we are halfway through the first quarter of 2016, we feel that GPU shipments may gain strength as AMD has planned to release Polaris-based GPUs by midyear, and NVIDIA may be firing the first salvo with its alleged Pascal-based GTX Titan GPU, which was rumored to be launched in April this year. The mass adoption of virtual reality may be just the final catalyst that both GPU manufacturers need. For more information on Jon Peddie Research findings, do head over here.
