Qualcomm's Quick Charge 4+ is faster, cooler and more efficient
Quick Charge 4 was announced a few months ago and it has been superseded by a newer charging technology, Quick Charge 4+.
Dubbed the "plus" program, Quick Charge 4+ is stated to charge up to 15% faster, 30% more efficiently and up to 3 degrees celsius cooler when compared to Quick Charge 4. This is made possible by the three enhancements which Qualcomm baked into Quick Charge 4+:
- Dual Charge - a second power management IC helps to divide the charge current which results in lower thermal dissipation and faster charging
- Intelligent Thermal Balancing - move current via the coolest path autonomously which eliminates hot spots for optimized power delivery
- Advanced Safety Features - the ability to monitor the temperature levels of the case and connector at the same time to prevent overheating and short circuit or damage to Type-C connector
The first smartphone to support Quick Charge 4+ is the nubia Z17. Existing Snapdragon 835-powered smartphones might miss out on Quick Charge 4+ as it is not a software update; it's a hardware upgrade where device and accessory manufacturers will choose whether to design their products with these new features included.
