Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 855 Plus is designed for 5G, gaming, AI and XR

Qualcomm just unveiled its latest mobile platform, the Snapdragon 855 Plus

As a follow-on to its flagship Snapdragon 855, the Snapdragon 855 Plus is optimized for enhanced performance and experiences in 5G, gaming, AI and XR.

That's not to say the original Snapdragon 855 can't, but it offers the stepping stone for such experiences while the new Snapdragon 855 Plus has enhanced this proposition. Its 8-core Kryo 485 CPU is able to run at higher peak speeds of up to 2.96GHz (vs. up to 2.8GHz previously) and the Adreno 640 GPU offers a 15% increase in performance. These might sound like small leaps, but given how much the Snapdragon 855 has progressed over the 845 predecessor, the new Plus edition can certainly hold its own.

The company claims that the Vulkan 1.1 graphics driver is 20% more power-efficient than Open GL ES and its Snapdragon Elite Gaming Experience has software enhancements to deliver leading experiences in gaming. Its AI engine offers a total capacity of more than 7 trillion operations per second!

The Snapdragon 855 Plus also comes with an integrated multi-gigabit Snapdragon X24 LTE 4G modem (like the Snapdragon 855) and X50 5G modem for superior cellular performance, better coverage and all-day battery life in premium smartphones.

Commercial devices powered by Snapdragon 855 Plus are expected to arrive in the market sometime in the second half of the year and the ASUS ROG Phone II is the first to feature it.
