Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, setting the pace for 2023 premium smartphones

At the annual Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm Technologies Inc. announced its latest mobile platform for 2023 premium and flagship smartphones – the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

As the successor to its 2022 version and the second generation of Qualcomm’s rebranded mobile processors, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (SD8G2)  hosts plenty of new tech heights to further smartphone experiences. SD8G2’s key improvements revolve around its AI processing, imaging processing (for photography and videography), mobile gaming, connectivity, audio, and on-chip security.

 

Better, faster AI

First of the many is Snapdragon Smart, which is the chipset’s artificial intelligence (AI) processing package. SD8G2 marks Qualcomm’s first Snapdragon processor capable of supporting INT4, a highly optimised AI precision format for sustained AI inferencing. Also new is an upgraded Hexagon processor, which offers faster NLP and support for multi-language translation and other AI camera features. 

The upgrade bequeaths a bigger tensor accelerator and up to 4.35x increased AI performance. The upgraded Qualcomm Sensing Hub now offers dual AI processors too. Developers with AI apps can also expect feature and tools support via Qualcomm’s AI Stack and AI Studio.

 

AV1 codec support

Snapdragon Sight is the umbrella term for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon imaging capabilities, encompassing all its camera and shooting experiences into its first-ever Cognitive ISP. SD8G2 uses real-time semantic segmentation, an AI-based technique, to enhance photos and videos.

Using its AI neural network, the camera is contextually aware of details like faces, facial features, hair, clothing, skies, and other visual cues. An example of such improvements is Qualcomm’s Always Sensing Camera, which allows the scanning of QR codes even when the phone is on standby.

Snapdragon Sight also now supports new imaging sensors. Sony Semiconductor Solutions, which manufactures mobile sensor components, has a quad-digital-overlap HDR technology compatible with SD8G2. Samsung and its ISOCELL HP3 sensor are also the first 200MP sensor optimised for SD8G2. SD8G2 is also the first Snapdragon to offer AV1 codec support (making it possible for 8KHDR60FPS video playback). 

 

On-device ray-tracing

Mobile gamers would be pleased with Snapdragon Elite Gaming’s new perks. New to SD8G2 is real-time, hardware-accelerated ray tracing for better, life-like graphics fidelity. To assist, there’s the new Qualcomm Adreno GPU with 25% faster performance and Vulkan 1.3 support.

There’s also the new 3.19GHz Kryo CPU with 40% more power efficiency (when compared to previous generations). Also added is Unreal Engine 5 Metahumans Framework on Snapdragon, which offers photorealistic human characters in-game.

 

10Gbps 5G downloads

SD8G2’s packs a new Snapdragon X70 5G Modem-RF System with a Qualcomm 5G AI processor, giving SD8G2’s overall 5G uploads and downloads higher speed (up to 10Gbps downlink and 3.5Gbps uplink), lower latency, and better power efficiency. SD8G2’s overall Snapdragon Connect suite also makes it the first Snapdragon to support 5G+5G/4G dual-SIM dual-active, allowing its users to run two 5G SIM cards simultaneously

Also included in Snapdragon Connect is a Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 system, supporting low latency Wi-Fi 7 up to 5.8Gbps (via High Band Simultaneous Multi-Link), and dual Bluetooth support for multiple Bluetooth devices.

 

Availability

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform will appear in phones by the end of 2022. OEMs and brands that have committed to the new chipset include ASUS Republic of Gamers, Honor, iQoo, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Redmagic, Redmi, SHARP, Sony Corporation, Vivo, Xiaomi, Xingji/Meizu, and ZTE.
