Qualcomm announced its latest generation of ultrasonic fingerprint sensor at CES 2021.

The 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 is 77% larger than its predecessor; the 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 1 measures 4mm x 9mm while the 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 measures 8mm x 8mm. The larger surface area allows the new ultrasonic sensor to capture 1.7x more biometric data. Coupled with faster processing, the 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 can unlock the phone 50% faster.

The first phones to be equipped with the 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 are expected to arrive early this year according to Qualcomm.  Will the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S21 models use this new fingerprint sensor? After all, Samsung has been using Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensors for the Galaxy S10/S20 and Galaxy Note10/Note20 models.
