Qualcomm reveals Snapdragon 888 benchmark results

Earlier this month, Qualcomm announced its upcoming processor for 2021 Android flagship smartphones, the Snapdragon 888 mobile platform with integrated 5G connectivity.

The company finally unveiled its benchmark scores over the weekend (19 to 20 December 2020), giving its future owners a preview of the power that's to come. Under normal circumstances, the HWZ team would have tested the new chipset via a hands-on, but COVID-19 and the host of safety measures around it made it impossible this year.

According to Qualcomm, the following third-party benchmark scores are the average scores across three runs. The Snapdragon 888 chipset was placed inside a reference design (basically, a mock smartphone for testing). Qualcomm said they used default settings with no tweaks to both performance and battery life.

If we compare the numbers above to our previous Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 performance preview, we can safely say that the new Snapdragon 888 can deliver anywhere from 10% to 32% better general performance than its 2020 counterpart.

While it's heartening, actual benchmark numbers are likely to differ when market-ready smartphones are shipped with the Snapdragon 888, because benchmark numbers are affected by other smartphone components, performance settings, storage components, display refresh rates, the timing of software updates, and more. Hence, using a flagship SoC like the Snapdragon 888 is only one part of the flagship phone equation, since it's down to phone makers to optimise their phones properly, and to include other features on the devices.
