Qualcomm Introduces AllPlay Smart Media & IPQ Smart Gateway Platforms

In addition to announcing its Snapdragon 802 processor for TVs and 602A processor for in-car entertainment, Qualcomm has also introduced its Internet Processor (IPQ) smart gateway platform, which provides new levels of network processing power, Wi-Fi capacity, and intelligence to transform connected experiences in the home, along with the commercial availability of the AllPlay smart media platform, which helps enable wireless whole home audio for the mass market.

IPQ Smart Gateway Platform

Qualcomm Atheros, Qualcomm's subsidiary, is driving a new class of smart gateway products with the Qualcomm Internet Processor (IPQ), enabling a robust Smarthome platform that supports connected devices, systems, applications and things for a richer consumer experience in the home. The smart gateway combines the processing power of IPQ, the Gigabit Wi-Fi StreamBoost technology and an open app environment to enable new services for the connected home. The smart gateway acts as a digital conduit that is designed to improve consumers’ connected experiences in the home, add to carriers’ consumer offerings, and help OEMs and developers further differentiate their products with new software and services.

The smart gateway acts as an always-on channel for carriers and digital content providers and networking vendors to offer new applications and services that are designed to improve consumers’ connected experiences at home. In addition to broadband data, voice and video, the smart gateway enables carriers to deliver home security, energy management, health monitoring, and other services that expand revenue opportunities and increase customer retention.

AllPlay Smart Media Platform

A wireless whole-home audio solution developed by Qualcomm Connected Experiences incorporating Qualcomm Atheros wireless technologies, the AllPlay smart audio module makes it easy to develop and offer consumers products with seamless streaming of high-quality local and cloud-based content – with high performance Wi-Fi connectivity – across multiple brands and platforms.  A broad array of audio equipment manufacturers and streaming music services – including Altec Lansing, iHeartRadio, Panasonic Corporation and Rhapsody– have committed to the commercial release of AllPlay-powered products this year.

The platform consists of:-

  • AllPlay smart audio module – Compact design includes a Qualcomm Atheros - 2x2 dual-band Wi-Fi SoC, flexible I/Os including USB, I2S, I2C and S/PDIF, on- and off-board antennas, support for multiple digital-to-analog converters, and global regulatory certification. The smart audio module is a turnkey component that can help save equipment manufacturers time and resources as they create whole home audio products.
  • AllPlay media player software package – Supports a broad suite of lossy, lossless and uncompressed audio codec (MP3, AAC, AAC+, FLAC, WAV, ALAC, PCM), including high-resolution 192 khz/24 bit output. The software package supports Party Mode playback across up to 10 zones/speakers, multi-source to multi-sink streaming, shared/social play lists; cross-platform Wi-Fi network configuration and Direct Mode streaming, over-the-air firmware updates, current support for DLNA – ensuring a comprehensive whole home audio user experience.
  • Flexible controller apps and SDKs – Cross-platform compatibility (iOS and Android), speaker grouping with capability for individual volume controls for each set of speakers (Party and Multi-Zone modes), and the ability to stream content from handsets, tablets and local media sources.
  • AllPlay Click SDK – Enables music services and software developers to easily incorporate AllPlay functionality into their iOS and Android apps.

Qualcomm Atheros is demonstrating an IPQ-powered smart gateway running various applications for the Smarthome at Booth #8252, Las Vegas Convention Center, Central Hall at the CES 2014.
