Qualcomm confirms 2018 iPhones will exclusively use Intel modems

Following earlier rumors that Apple may be dropping Qualcomm entirely from its 2018 iPhone and iPad lineup, Qualcomm CFO, George Davis, has now confirmed the worst for Qualcomm.

Davis told CNBC, "Apple intends to solely use our competitors' modems rather than our modems in its next iPhone release."

Apple has been using both Qualcomm and Intel modems in its iPhones for the past two years - Qualcomm for CDMA devices, and Intel for GSM devices. However, Intel's new XMM7560 chip is able to offer support for both CDMA and GSM networks, which would let Apple drop Qualcomm entirely. Apple is also in the midst of an ongoing legal battle with Qualcomm over patent rights.

Davis did assert that Qualcomm would continue to provide modems for older iPhone models which continue to be sold.
