Qualcomm brings 5G connectivity to budget phones with Snapdragon 480

The next generation of budget phones will come with 5G connectivity thanks to Qualcomm's latest product release, the Snapdragon 480 5G mobile platform. This means more users around the world will get access to 5G connectivity.

The Snapdragon 480 5G comes with Snapdragon X51 5G modem which supports mmWave and Sub-6 GHz 5G, Standalone (SA) and Non-standalone (NSA) modes, Time Division Duplexing (TDD), Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD), and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS). It also supports 2x2 Wi-Fi with several Wi-Fi 6 features such as 8x8 sounding with multi-user MIMO. 

Built on an 8nm process, the Snapdragon 480 5G consists of Kryo 460 CPU with up to 2.0GHz, Adreno 619 GPU, and Hexagon 686 processors. Qualcomm states the new chips help to deliver up to 70% better AI performance. Quick Charge 4+ technology is also supported on the Snapdragon 480 5G.

Other specs include Qualcomm Spectra 345 ISP to enable all three cameras to capture footage at the same time, support for 120fps FHD+ display, and Bluetooth 5.1. 

HMD Global, OnePlus, Oppo and Vivo will be among the first phone makers to release devices powered by the Snapdragon 480 5G in early 2021.
