As an entry-level NAS, QNAP says their baby-blue TS-230 delivers an always-on storage solution to serve as the one-stop home portal for storage, backup, and the streaming of photos, music, and videos to multiple devices within the home and more.

The TS-230 uses a Realtek RTD1296 quad-core 1.4 GHz processor and has 2GB DDR4 RAM. It can take both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA HDDs and SSDs and supports up to 14TB of storage of most HDD manufacturers. A full list of compatible drives for the TS-230 is available online.

On top of support for 4K (H.264) hardware decoding as well as real-time transcoding, a Gigabit Ethernet port enables up to 113MB/s transfer speeds.

We’ve been covering some TerraMaster DASs recently, so the difference is the lack of network support for the TerraMaster storage devices.

Make the TS-230 your home multimedia hub for streaming photos, music, and videos to computers, TVs, or mobile devices. Do this by installing the Plex Media Server app to stream media files from the NAS to your mobile devices, DLNA compatible devices and HDTV by using common media streaming devices, including Apple TV (via Qmedia), Google Chromecast, and Amazon Fire TV.

myQNAPcloud allows you to be always connected to your TS-230 at home via the Internet by using a unique domain name. It can be accessed, managed, and data shared without needing to worry about complex routing environments. QNAP also provides security in the form of SSL certificates to 2,048-bits.

It supports both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives. Image courtesy of QNAP.

To ensure your data remains safe, security is provided by QNAP covering the areas of:

  • IP blocking: Operates policy-based automatic IP blocking of suspicious IP addresses.
  • 2-step verification: When activated, anyone who logs in to the TS-230 needs to enter a one-time verification code after their username and password.
  • Notification Centre: Consolidates system logs and notifications of all NAS apps, facilitating smooth and easy NAS management. Users can receive notifications via emails, SMS, instant messages, and push notifications (through the Qmanager mobile app and web browsers).
