PSB updates their popular Alpha speaker range with new drivers and lower prices

PSB’s Alpha speaker range was first introduced in 1991, and those speakers went on to win every speaker shootout, putting PSB speakers on the audio world roadmap. And now the company has updated the line, taking advantage of all the latest technologies to create speakers that are even better than the originals thanks to the use of new drivers.

Woofers – Two new drivers have been developed for the new Alpha models, a 4” and a 5.25”. Both use dual layer voice coils with a powerful magnet structure for low distortion and high output. The cones are made from a special textured polypropylene compound that prevents cone breakup and extends frequency range.

The woofers are also reflex loaded, channeling the back wave energy via a port tube to extend the bass response and extend the efficiency. The shape of the port has also been specially engineered to prevent port chuff.

Tweeter – A specially developed 0.75” aluminum alloy dome is hard anodized to extend the high frequency response well beyond the 20kHz range. A wave guide on the front of the tweeter helps to better match its response when near the crossover point with the woofers for a more seamless transition. Ferro fluid cooling is used to prevent dynamic compression during musical climaxes, with neodymium magnets used for high sensitivity.

Even the cabinets have been specially re-engineered, taking damping material that has been developed for many years on the more expensive PSB models. High quality vinyl in Black Ash and Walnut combine with magnetically attached grilles which are unique in that they don’t affect the sound of the speaker whether attached or removed.

The entire Alpha series line-up has options for every space.

The Alpha series consists of the Alpha P3 compact monitor, the Alpha P5 monitor, the C10 center/monitor and the Alpha T20 towers. Both the P3 and P5 are two-way bookshelf speakers that can be placed on a stand, a shelf, or a table for full-range sound. The T20 towers add an additional woofer in a larger floor-standing cabinet for bigger sound to better match larger spaces. Finally, the C10 is a center channel that has a wide flat response for vocals.

As mentioned in the title, the new series of Alpha speakers are actually retailing for less than the originals (after adjusting for inflation), while performing better.

They’re available for audition and purchase now at PSB Speakers Showroom by Lenbrook Asia.

Local pricing is as follows:

PSB Speakers Alpha P3 (pair) – S$ 299

PSB Speakers Alpha P5 (pair)– S$ 599

PSB Speakers Alpha C10 – S$ 499

PSB Speakers Alpha T10 (pair) – S$ 999
