PSA: Update WhatsApp now to avoid losing your chat groups

Check Point Research has detected that WhatsApp protocol could be manipulated to manipulate messages and use a bug in XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) to replace the identifier of a recipient (i.e. his phone number) to any non-digit character. The result is that the participant’s next message will cause WhatsApp to crash for every member in the group.

The last thing you'll see is a group member leaving a message with his name changed.

This will happen even after the app is re-opened, resulting in a crash loop. What’s more, all data that was written and shared in the group will now be gone for good. The group will not be able to be restored, and will have to be deleted to stop the crash.

More technical details available on their blog page.
