As reliable and fast as Face ID is, it has a problem with masks. Apple tried to alleviate this with iOS 13.5 by making the prompt to enter your passcode appear faster, but, let's be real, it's a hassle.
Fortunately, Apple has just released iOS 14.5 and watchOS 7.4. Together, the two updates will enable users to use their Apple Watch to unlock their iPhone.
Once you have updated your phone and watch, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and scroll down. You'll see the option "Unlock with Apple Watch".
Remember, this feature will only work if the following conditions are met:
- Face ID detects a mask
- Your Apple Watch is nearby
- Your Apple Watch is on your wrist
- Your Apple Watch is unlocked
- Your Apple Watch has a passcode enabled
iOS 14.5 also introduces some other important new features including App Tracking Transparency, new emojis that promote inclusivity, support for Apple's new AirTags, redesigned Podcasts app, and more.
