PSA: Accessories with magnets/metal may throw off OIS and NFC on new iPhones

Having issues with the NFC or the optical image stabilization on your new iPhone? According to a report by 9to5mac, your accessories may be the cause of your problem.

A small number of users online have noticed that using accessories that have magnets or metal components affects the iPhone 6 Plus’s optical image stabilization, and Apple does warn users to avoid users to avoid accessories that use magnets or metal components in a support document that has been updated in the months following the launch of the new iPhones.

The problem (see video below) was first noticed following the iPhone 6 Plus launch in September, but viewers were unaware of the cause.

Apple has already been warning accessory makers about metal and magnets in their products as these may affect the iPhone’s compass, but now the warning goes out to manufacturers in their MFi program with specific reference to the NFC and optical image stabilization performance too.

Bottom line: Stay off cases and accessories that don’t take Apple’s advice in avoiding metal and magnets and your NFC/ image stabilization features should be just fine.
