PSA: The 3-year-old Samsung Galaxy S8 is now on a quarterly security update schedule

If you’ve a flagship Samsung Galaxy device, you should know that the company typically offers three years of monthly security updates (quarterly updates from the fourth year) and two major OS updates. For some lower-end devices, it can be quarterly updates all the year or as and when Samsung is ready.

A past flagship device that’s now gone from monthly to quarterly updates is the Galaxy S8. Launched in 2017, the S8 is now into its fourth year, so this move doesn’t come as a surprise. If you’re still holding on to an S8, you’re also stuck with Android Pie instead of Android Q.

To find out which tier your device belongs to, you can refer to this frequently updated Android Security Updates document.

P.S.: For the most part, I’m fine with Samsung’s security updates release schedule. However, I do feel that for flagship devices such as the Galaxy S20, Z Flip and Fold, they should also at least get three major Android version updates.
