A premium version of Firefox is coming this fall

Mozilla CEO has said in an interview that the company plans to launch a premium version of its Firefox web browser later this year.

Details surrounding the paid version of Firefox are still hazy but it could include additional features like VPN and secure cloud storage.

Fans of Firefox need not worry that the browser will become pay to use. The free version of Firefox will remain as it is, but the company needs to develop alternative sources of revenue and they think a premium version of Firefox for its most dedicated users can help them do just that.

Mozilla CEO Chris Beard said:

We are working on three sources of income, and we want to rebalance them. We have Search, but we also make content. We have a company called Pocket that discovers and curates content. There is also sponsored content. This is the content business.

And the third one we are working on and developing [...] are premium levels for some of these offerings. You can imagine something like a secure storage solution.

According to the report, a whopping 90% of Mozilla's revenue currently comes from partnerships with search engines providers — particularly Google, who, with Google Chrome, is a direct competitor.
