Preliminary report shows Samsung dominating smartphone sales in Q1 2016

The latest smartphone vendor preliminary report showed that Samsung maintained their lead in the smartphone industry by shipping the highest volume of handsets in Q1 2016, against other individual brands.

According to market projection data provided by market intelligence firm IDC Research Inc., Samsung has the largest market share of smartphones shipped at 24.5 percent, in Q1 2016. Samsung may have sold 500,000 less units when compared year-on-year (Q1 of 2015), but the Korean electronics company market share is significantly larger than other top performers: Apple sits at 15.3 percent for market share, while Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo have a total of 18 percent market share. Other smartphone brands outside of the top five of Q1 2016 cumulatively make up 42.3 percent of the remaining market share.

The report found that the new Samsung Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge were the main drivers of Samsung’s strong performance in Q1, helped along with aggressive marketing efforts that lasted throughout Q1 2016. For Apple, the iPhone SE had to go up against other powerful Android OS smartphones at lower prices, signifying tougher competition for future iPhones to come.

A total of 334.9 million smartphones were shipped in the Q1 2016 quarter alone. As a whole, the smartphone industry is nearly flat-lining (with Q1 2015 seeing 334.3 million phones shipped). Market leaders Apple and Samsung are experiencing a year-on-year decline to the number of phones shipped in the same quarter.

At the same time, Chinese smartphone brands are feeling the heat, with Lenovo and Xiaomi booted out of top five by fellow Chinese brands Oppo and Vivo. According to the report, Huawei continues to build on their international reputation from the year before by bringing better premium devices, such as the Nexus 6P.

Details of this preliminary report can be found at the World Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker by IDC. The tracker provides the total market size and vendor share for the smartphone industry. It measures the products in unit shipments and value.
