Possible name of Huawei's own mobile OS revealed

Chinese media reports claimed to have knowledge on the possible name of Huawei's own mobile OS.

According to China's national English language newspaper Global Times and Huawei Central, Huawei's own mobile OS is reportedly called "HongMeng" and has been in active development since 2012. The sources added that the "HongMeng" OS is currently being tested and will gradually replace Android OS.

Google suspended Huawei's Android license yesterday after the Trump administration enforced trade restrictions on U.S companies working with Chinese equipment providers. This led a growing list of tech companies such as Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom and Infineon to halt their supplies to Huawei.

Huawei CEO Richard Yu revealed in March that the company is ready to replace Android and Windows with its own OS if the need arises. In fact, it has been preparing for "worst-case scenarios" like this for many years. The "HongMeng" OS is rumored to be built with the help of former Nokia engineers.

Even if Huawei rolls out "HongMeng" OS to replace Android, it would face an uphill task to attract developers to build apps for the new mobile OS. Amazon and Microsoft tried to build their respective app stores for several years, but they still couldn't do it with all their clout and influence. Hence, a new mobile OS with little or no apps is unlikely to survive in the iOS-Android duopoly.
