2 June 2021 update: Xiaomi shifted the retail start date of the Poco M3 Pro 5G from 1 June to 6 June 2021.

A round of applause as we welcome Poco's second entry-level smartphone, the Poco M3 Pro 5G.

Announced today (1 June 2021), the Poco M3 5G is an upgraded entry-level Poco M3, with support for 5G dual SIM and a higher 90Hz refresh rate.

The phone also packs a processor from MediaTek, unlike the M3. Inside the Poco M3 Pro 5G is a Dimensity 700 chipset, an entry-level processor built on the 7nm manufacturing process. It's a 2021 release with on-chip support for 5G networks. In some ways, it can be seen as an upgrade from the previous Poco M3's Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 chipset, as that is an 11nm, early-2020 release that supports up to 4G networks only.

Is Poco M3 Pro 5G actually better than the Poco M3?

Well, those new perks are the major differences between the new Poco M3 Pro 5G and the previous Poco M3 phone it was based on. The following features round off what the new entry-level Poco phone offers.

The M3 Pro 5G has a 6.5-inch, FHD+ (2,400 x 1,080 pixels resolution) LCD DotDisplay. As mentioned, it now has a maximum refresh rate of 90Hz, but the display also packs DynamicSwitch, an adaptive refresh rate feature that helps save battery power, depending on the type of content displayed on the phone. DynamicSwitch offers 30, 50, 60, and 90Hz refresh rates, with the lower tiers presumably for text or lightweight apps.

Despite its slightly smaller display, the Poco M3 Pro 5G still has a 91% screen-to-body ratio.

The AI triple rear camera array on the M3 Pro 5G is similar to the model it was based on (48MP f/1.79 main lens + 2MP f/2.4 macro lens + 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor), but the front camera was reduced to a single 8MP shooter at f/2.0 aperture.

Another trade-off is the smaller battery capacity, now at 5,000mAh. It still supports the same charging profile as the Poco M3, with 18W fast charging and a 22.5W charging adapter in the box.

Returning features include its NFC support, IR blaster, and a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired audio.

So, you get 5G connectivity and a more fluid display in exchange for a smaller battery. The main perk is its 5G compatibility at a super-affordable price tag.

Pricing and availability

The Poco M3 Pro 5G is available in two configurations from 6 June 2021:

From 6 June midnight (12 AM), the phones will go at a promotional price of S$249 and S$279, respectively, for 48 hours, before they revert to their official retail prices.
