The latest data from IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone tracker reveals China's smartphone market experienced a double-digit drop in shipments for the third consecutive quarter.

IDC says 71.1 million phones shipped in China in Q3, which is a drop of 11.9% year-on-year (YoY). Despite the continued weak demand, the drop is narrower than the previous two quarters thanks to the launch of the Apple iPhone 14 lineup and Huawei Mate 50 series.

The high-end segment, consisting of phones that cost more than US$600, experienced little impact from the weak demand. Premium foldable devices saw triple-digit YoY growth and there was more than one million units shipped in Q3, which is the highest ever in a single quarter. Huawei leads the foldable market, followed by Samsung, vivo and Xiaomi.

IDC believes the China's phone market is unlikely to recover in the short term as the country battles with Covid-19 cases, and gloomy domestic and global economic conditions.
