Periscope lens may be exclusive to the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

Apple is reportedly introducing periscope lens only on the iPhone 15 Pro Max in 2023.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared in a blog post the iPhone 15 Pro will continue to have the telephoto lens for optical zoom while the iPhone 15 Pro Max will sport the new periscople lens. Kuo says Apple will use the same or similar periscope lens on the iPhone 16 Pro models in 2024.

The periscope lens will reflect light with an angled mirror towards the image sensor, which results in a change in direction for the light to travel and allowing a longer "folded" telephoto setup for longer zoom without loss in quality.

Apple has been rumoured for years to be working on periscope lens for the iPhone. DigiTimes reported in 2020 that Apple could partner with South Korean companies to make periscope lens. The iPhone maker was granted a patent on a folded camera system for use in small factor cameras.

Analyst Jeff Pu wrote earlier this year that Lante Optics will supply periscope lens for the 2023 iPhones. TheElec said in April that Apple had recruited a South Korean firm to supply periscope telephoto lens for the 2023 iPhone.
