Peak Design rethinks the travel tripod
After backpacks, Peak Design’s looking to redesign travel tripods to be smaller and easier to use.
You probably know Peak Design for their backpacks, but now they’ve gone into tripods too, as evidenced from this campaign on Kickstarter. As the page explains, Peak Design has reworked the geometry of their tripod legs so they fold down closer to the center column, making for a much smaller tripod.
Less wasted space is always a good thing, but Peak Design has also reworked the traditional leg lock design so there aren’t any protruding knobs. This means the tripod can fit any water bottle pocket, and has the advantage of being easier to setup and fold down. It also comes with its own compact ball head that’s of their own design. It uses just one ring for adjustment and is made for both cameras and mobile phones, with a universal phone mount that stores away in the tripod’s center column.
Here’s a chart of how the Peak Design tripod compares to others in this category.
The campaign has 50 days to go as of time of writing, and has already grossly exceeded its goal of US$500,000. (Current count is US$5,295,582) so it should be a pretty safe bet as far as KickStarter campaigns go.
