A recently granted patent reveals the number of the years that Apple has been working on the Vision Pro.
According to Patently Apple, the original patent is dated sometime in 2007 which was the year the first iPhone launched. This indicates that Apple has been working on the Vision Pro for at least 16 years!
The patent describes a virtual reality headset that can project 3D environments for the user. The headset is stated to have one or more optical and digital components that can be used to adjust the displayed media to overlay features of a theatre, stadium or concert setting.
In addition, the patent covers how one or more sensors on the headset may detect the user's movements and adjust the displayed image accordingly. The patent also outlined how the device may adjust the audio output along with adjustments to the media content according to the virtual position and head movements of the user.
The above capabilities, along with others in the patent application, seem to mirror the features of the Apple Vision Pro. For example, apps appear as though they are suspended in the user's space, casting realistic shadows, and reacting to different light intensities in the environment.
The Vision Pro also allows users to customise the screen size within their space while delivering spatial audio. To find out more about what it is like using the Apple Vision Pro can do, check out our hands-on article!
Apple's long-term investment in the research and development of the Vision Pro appears to have paid off; Samsung and Google reportedly delayed the launch of their Extended Reality headset as they feel the device may not match up to what the Apple Vision Pro offers.
