Panasonic announces the development of the world’s first 8K organic sensor camera system
Remember the sensor collaboration between Panasonic and Fujifilm way back in 2013? Well, Panasonic Corporation has just announced the development of the world’s first 8K camera with organic sensor, set to launch in the fall of 2019.
Labelled the AK-SHB 810, the camera will be a compact, lightweight box-type camera with Arri’s PL mount. The 8K organic sensor will make for more efficient photoelectric conversion and accumulation as photoelectric conversion and charge accumulation can be kept independent. Images captured with this high resolution sensor will have thus have good details as well as a wide dynamic range.
Because it will use a global shutter that operates at shutter speeds faster than 1/120s, skew and banding due to flash sync issues will be largely eliminated. The camera will also be able to provide ND filter effects electronically by controlling the voltage applied to the organic thin film.
Simply connect the camera unit to the newly developed AK-SHU 810 image processing unit via a fiber optic cable, and you can get output in 8K/4K/HD, making it lighter and a more versatile camera than what is currently in the market. This also means the camera can be used for a wide range of broadcast solutions that wasn’t possible from a single camera before.
Nothing is mentioned in terms of price, so we’ll wait to hear more about what is undoubtedly a commercial solution.
