Out of storage? Toshiba drops new 16TB MG08 series HDD

Toshiba has just announced its new MG08 series of HDDs and the largest drive goes up to 16TB.

To be clear, this isn't the first 16TB HDD. Seagate announced a 16TB HDD late last year but that was using the company's proprietary HAMR technology (heat-assisted magnetic recording).

Toshiba's using what the company calls CMR (conventional magnetic recording). In other words, no fancy laser heating required. The drive is also helium-sealed.

As you would expect, the MG08 HDDs are targeted at enterprise use. The 16TB model comes in a standard 3.5-inch form factor, spins at 7,200rpm, and is available with SATA and SAS support.

No word yet on availability and pricing but Toshiba did say that the 16TB model will begin being sampled by select customers by the end of January.
