Oppo's new R9 smartphone has a 16-megapixel selfie camera!

Oppo announced today that its new R9 smartphone will be launching in Singapore on 30th April. The 5.5-inch smartphone (also known as the Oppo F1 Plus in some regions) boasts a Full HD AMOLED display, a lightning fast fingerprint scanner, a 13-megapixel rear camera and, incredibly, a 16-megapixel front camera!

The phone has a sleek magnesium-alloy unibody design, measuring 151.8 x 74.3 x 6.6mm and weighing a mere 145g. It definitely has more than a passing resemblance to Apple's iPhone 6, which is a bit of a shame, as we quite liked Oppo's earlier, more unique designs, but it's still an undeniably attractive phone.

According to Oppo its new fingerprint scanner technology is able to recognize both wet or dry fingerprints, and can unlock the phone in just 0.2 seconds, making it the faster fingerprint scanner on the market.

The highlight of the phone is its 16-megapixel front-facing camera, which Oppo is calling a Hi-Light Camera, as it says it can capture great selfies even in low-light conditions. The camera uses a custom-built sensor, co-developed with Samsung, that apparently features an optimized arrangement of pixels on the sensor itself to ensure clear, bright and colorful images. The phone comes with Oppo's Beautify 4.0 feature, which is optimized to capture selfies with bright, clear skin. The front camera is also capable of taking a 120 degree 'selfie panorama' which can be done by rotating the camera  with your wrist, similar to how you would when take a regular panorama shot with the rear camera.

The phone is powered by a Mediatek MTK Helio P10 MT6755 octa-core 2.0GHz processor with 4GB RAM. Storage-wise, you get 64GB internally with an option to expand up to 128GB through an SD card slot that also serves as a secondary Nano SIM slot. The phone runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop but has been heavily skinned with Oppo's own Color OS 3.0. Keeping with the Apple-like design, Color OS 3.0 clearly takes some cues from iOS, but is clean, minimalist and easy to use.

As with most of Oppo's phones, the R9 supports Oppo's lightning fast VOOC Flash Charge technology and is capable of reaching 70 percent charge after just 30 minutes. The battery itself is a 2,850mAh unit.

The R9 will be launching at Oppo concept stores, as well as all M1, Singtel and StarHub stores on 30th April in Gold for S$649. A Rose Gold option will be launching in May for the same price.
